An introspective retrospective farewell

http://sairensthoughts.blogspot.com/

I'm not fully moved out of here yet, but this is a heads-up.  A few options for those of you who want to keep track of me, but have been using Xanga's email subscriptions to do it...
The new place has an RSS feed; I've stuck a little reader doo-hickey (sorry, I'm really not the most savvy on this RSS thing) but what it boils down to is your reader - I put mine on my Google homepage -- will update with the latest blog posts.  Or I bet you could hook it up as a live bookmark. Or you can just go to the page.

It's sort of ironic, really. I've been here at Xanga since ... finals week of Fall '03. And in all that time, I've never gone Premium. But I think that I'm about to, now... just as I'm leaving... for a month.  I want to download my archives to have them forever and ever. Because as I look back, some of the posts are typical "woke up, brushed teeth" or "omg so stressed life is hard"... but I think some are pretty good.  I particularly like the stuff I wrote while in Costa Rica.  Getting back from that was probably the beginning of the end of my daily blogging.  Now I have real people to vent every little thing at.    So we'll see where that goes.  Maybe it's silly to switch blog forums when I'm really not blogging that much anymore anyhow.  Or maybe all I need is a fresh start.

I just noticed that this "Edit weblog entry" page really doesn't display well in Firefox 2.0.  They should really work on that. Firefox 2 is the new Firefox 1, after all.

I also think I'm going to miss Xangazon.  That's kinda fun.  But I can do my own widgets like that, too.  Maybe I can find the code on this page and insert it into a Blogger widget.   Maybe I'll just keep two pages going and confuse everyone.  Maybe I'm only kidding myself that anyone will bother reading either one. :-p

So I, too, am thinking about jumping ship for Blogger. Does anyone know if I can do email subscriptions with them like I can with Xanga?  Funny thing this... I went to Blogger and signed in with my Google account, and it asked me if I wanted to try Old or New Blogger. Well I'd found an old "BlogSpot" journal of mine from 2001, and thought that might be it. So I put in my typical username and password... and found I actually HAVE a Blogger acct!  ...but it wasn't the BlogSpot one I found (even though that says it was powered by Blogger.)

I haven't written in this Blogger acct since Nov 9, 2000.  It's still pretty entertaining. A little pretentious, but what the hell. Also, all the posts are made within 10 minutes of each other, so I think I was just typing up a handwritten journal that I had and must have only used the account once!

And I still can't figure out how to log into this blogspot account.

So I think I'll figure out how to export everything from my Xanga to some kind of permanent document...then probably switch some weekend when I actually feel like sitting at my computer...which is basically never. Shoot, it took me over a year to change my voicemail.  For a person in tech, I sometimes feel remarkably Luddite.

I am writing to officially protest what I will term "The War on Thanksgiving."

It begins in late October, and seems to start a little earlier every year. The radio stations start playing Christmas tunes, the stores put up their Christmas decoration.  By mid-November, half of suburban homes have hung their Christmas lights or put up Christmas wreaths.

Now, I've got nothing against Christmas. I like it quite a lot. I also like Yule and Festivus and the New Year. But I also like Thanksgiving.  To each holiday its proper season.  And so, in my home, there is no sign of Christmas (as a matter of fact, I only took down the pumpkins-with-faces a week or so ago).  The harvest wreath is still up on our front door, and little sprigs of harvest decor and pumpkins still festoon our living room.  I will not be bringing Christmas decorations back with me from Thanksgiving dinner at my parents house.   I will not be indulging in Christmas sales and shopping on Friday.  It's WAY too much like "Okay, yeah, great, Thanksgiving YAY it's over let's have Christmas now!!"

Christmas in my home will not be evident until December. On December 1st, I may begin decorating.  I may not finish.  It may take until mid-December to get stuff ready. But hey-- that's my way.  I sat around on Halloween night and carved pumpkins. It was fabulous.

Remember, kids.. don't be part of the evil War on Thanksgiving. Celebrate Christmas, but in its time.

NO WAR ON THANKSGIVING!

Oh yes... and happy holidays.

Golly, gee! The House, the Senate (or close enough for government work) --- and Rumsfeld??   Is it my birthday already?

And for your pleasure, two bumper stickers inspired by last night's turns of event:

"I hated Bush before hating Bush was cool"

and in the vein of the "It's a child, not a choice" slogan

"It's a blastocyst, not a baby."*

*Disclaimer: This is a commentary on my position on stem cell research, and not on abortion, which I hope is always rare.
